This chipset is located near the processor socket, serves to connect and control the processor to system memory and graphics systems. Usually large size compared to most other chips in the motherboard. Some motherboards adding heatsinks or cooling fans on the chip so that the chip itself is enclosed by a fan.

Part of the small size of the motherboard chipset on the northbridge functions of connecting and controlling the IDE bus, PCI, keyboard, mouse, USB and power management. Some also provide facilities southbridge chip sound card chip embedded in it.
